Herstory
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women. These students wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need. The first public act performed by the founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C. in March, 1913. Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930. Delta Sigma Theta is a private, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to establish and maintain a high standard of morality and scholarship among minority women, while providing services and programs to promote human welfare.
This sisterhood is a public service organization with over 200,000 members including many famous and notable Deltas worldwide. Currently Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, inc. has over 900 chapters both nationally and internationally.
The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organization's Five Point Programmatic Thrust:
• Economic Development
• Educational Development
• International Awareness & Involvement
• Physical and Mental Health
• Political Awareness & Involvement
